Senior Cycle

Elaine's expericence of LCA

In June 2011 I completed my Junior Certificate and decided to do Leaving Certificate Applied instead of the traditional Leaving Certificate. This involved doing key assignments and tasks throughout the two years. One of the tasks we did was to fundraise for Limerick Animal Welfare and Down's Syndrome Ireland by celebrating Spanish day in Scoil Pol – We wore Yellow and Red t-shirts (the colours of the Spanish flag). We cooked Spanish dishes and served them to pupils and staff. As part of the enterprise task we grew shamrocks and sold them for St. Patrick's Day, I learnt about Ethnic Cuisine and designed a website. As part of the Contemporary Issues task I researched racism and gave a presentation to the class. I also did tasks on personal reflection and practical achievement. As part of the LCA programme we did work experience each Friday. I worked in pre-schools and primary schools. I found the work experience the most enjoyable part of the course. LCA is marked over the two years in a continuous assessment. This I found much better than sitting exams at the end of sixth year, as there aren't as many exams to do. I was glad I did LCA and I am now studying Early Childhood Care and Education.
