The Second Year Meitheal Mentors:
Supporting First Year Students on Their Secondary School Journey

Starting secondary school can feel like a big leap for students coming straight from primary school. New subjects, new routines, and a much larger environment can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s where our Second Year Meitheal Mentors step in.

The Meitheal Mentors are a group of carefully selected Second Year students who volunteer their time to support First Years as they settle into secondary school life. Their name, Meitheal – an Irish word that refers to the traditional practice of neighbours coming together to help each other – reflects the very heart of what they do: community, support, and teamwork.

What do the Meitheal Mentors Do?

The mentors act as friendly guides for First Year students during their transition to secondary school. Their main responsibilities include:

  • Welcoming First Years on their first day and introducing them to school life.
  • Leading small group activities that encourage friendship and inclusion.
  • Answering questions about lockers, timetables, school rules, and other day-to-day concerns.
  • Organising events such as team-building workshops, quizzes, or fun activities to help First Years feel at home.
  • Providing ongoing support throughout the year, checking in regularly and being approachable role models.

Why Is It Important?

Moving from primary to secondary school can be daunting. Research shows that peer-to-peer support helps younger students feel more confident, connected, and less anxious about the change. Having a relatable mentor who has recently gone through the same transition makes all the difference.

The Meitheal Mentors promote:

  • Friendship and belonging – helping First Years form bonds quickly.
  • Positive school spirit – encouraging kindness, respect, and inclusion.
  • Confidence building – showing First Years that it’s normal to ask for help.
  • Leadership development – giving Second Years the opportunity to learn responsibility, empathy, and communication skills.

How Are Mentors Chosen?

Students apply for the role at the end of First Year. Selection is based on qualities such as:

  • Friendliness and approachability
  • Responsibility and reliability
  • Willingness to listen and help
  • Commitment to supporting the school community

The Meitheal programme shows the true meaning of teamwork. Not only do First Years benefit from guidance, but the mentors themselves gain confidence, leadership skills, and pride in making a difference. It’s a win–win for the whole school community.
